Edmond school bus cameras
The Edmond School District uses part of a $35.5-million bond package to make its transportation system more safe. The district has purchased nine new buses with three cameras mounted inside and two cameras mounted on the exterior. "I thought it was the best thing they could have done," says Pat McKinley, a bus driver with the Edmond School District. Keeping the students safe is something Pat takes very seriously. "When you pull up from a stop, they can be coming from behind you, in front of you, that side, that side," he says. "I feel like these are my kids." He says he's tired of other drivers making his job more difficult. "I've had to lay on my horn to get a car's attention," says Pat. "They'll stop and I can watch them in my mirror. They'll look up, look down, then go around me when my sign's out and there's kids crossing the street." School officials say drivers running school bus stop signs has become a growing problem in the District and Nationwide. "We have had motorists who have been in such a hurry that they will go around the bus and up onto the sidewalk," said Susan Parks-Schlepp, Public Information Officer with the Edmond School District. The law states drivers must stop for school bus' extended-arm stop signs, and now the new cameras will help monitor that. "It will be able to allow us to capture the license plate of a passing motorist who does not stop when a bus stop arm is deployed," says Parks-Schlepp. "We can then turn that over to Edmond Police for possible prosecution." The Edmond Police Department says, if an officer sees someone run the bus stop sign, the driver could receive a $249 fine. The Department is currently working with the City Attorney to determine a protocol for the video footage. The cameras not only keep an eye on other drivers, but also what's happening inside the bus. "It helps us have video footage if children misbehave. It also gives a record of the driver's actions, as well. So, if a parent were ever to allege something against a driver, we would have a video record of that," says Parks-Schlepp.
