Task Force on School Security to Release Recommendations
After the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, school security has been on the minds of many.
For weeks we've been following Oklahoma's Commission on school security and now they make their final recommendations.
The Oklahoma panel focused on increasing school security will vote Tuesday on their final recommendations that will then be presented to the state legislature. This task force was formed after the deadly shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary school that killed 20 children and six school employees.
The 22 member panel hopes their recommendations will help prevent similar attacks in Oklahoma. Law enforcement and security experts along with Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb make up the panel.
Some of the proposals the panel is considering include mental health treatments for students, a school security institute and creating a statewide tip line.
Lieutenant Governor Lamb says, "Bartlesville this past December is a prime example of the importance of having open communication. One student stopped another student's attempt of large scale school violence by telling someone. We want to have that means and avenue available in reinstating a tip line in the state would be helpful in doing that."
The panel created these recommendations following a series of presentations by school security and terrorism experts on ways to protect the safety of public school students.
The task force will vote on these final recommendations for legislative action Tuesday.

Wife guilty in Nichols Hills fire chief slaying
May 22, 2013 00:24 GMT
EL RENO, Okla. (AP) -- A jury in El Reno has convicted Rebecca Bryan of the murder of her husband, Nichols Hills Fire Chief Keith Bryan, and recommended a sentence of life in prison without parole.
Jurors reached the Tuesday verdict after about four hours of deliberation.
The 54-year-old Bryan claimed an intruder had shot her husband, though police found her Ruger pistol in a clothes dryer in their home after the shooting.
The gun was matched to the bullet used to shoot Keith Bryan in 2011 at the couple's Mustang home. Police also found a spent shell casing and a left-handed rubber glove wrapped in a bullet-riddled blanket.
The Oklahoman reports (http://is.gd/mvC6Mi ) Bryan didn't display her emotions when the verdict was read. Her lawyer gave her a hug and told her he was sorry.
