Religious voting
Some Oklahomans are calling for some assistance before picking the next President of the United States. Churches and religious organizations across the state are encouraging their congregations to take their souls to polls. "I think that people of faith ought to use their beliefs and faith in everything that they do," says Pastor Ray Douglas, Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church, during the "Souls to the Polls" march. "We marched over about half-a-mile to the Oklahoma County Election Board." "Voting has not always been a right to individuals, so it is important for you to exercise your right," says John Pettis, of the Souls to the Polls Committee. Pastor Douglas says the important decision should not be made on your own. "If they're people of faith, I encourage them to be prayerful as they vote. Pray your way to the polls," says Pastor Douglas. "Part of being a responsible Christian is good citizenship," adds Brian Hobbs, Communication Director for the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. He says the Convention has produced a non-partisan voting guide, which asks 25 questions of the candidates that deal with issues it believes are important to people of faith. "Education, pro-life issues, the family, the economy, and also related to the lottery in society," says Hobbs. "We've got a lot of difficult issues with which to deal and we want people of faith to lead in helping to resolve some of those issues," says Harry Black, Associational Missionary with the Captial Baptist Association, which represents 167 Southern Baptist Churches in Oklahoma. Each has a different level of political activism. "Some of our congregations are very pro-active in the political realm, so they'll go as far as they feel like they can go to encourage people to vote, even in some very specific ways," he says. Regardless of who is chosen as the leader of the Nation, these folks all have one thing in common, the leader of their lives will remain the same. "We believe, however the election turns out, that God is still sovereign, God is still good, the world doesn't come to an end."
