Hearing May Be 'Mini-Trial' In Theater Shootings
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) -- The suspect in the Colorado movie theater killings is returning to court for a hearing that might be the closest thing to a trial the victims and their families get to see.
James Holmes is charged with killing 12 people and injuring 70 by opening fire in a theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora last July.
A week long preliminary hearing for Holmes starts Monday. Prosecutors will outline their case against Holmes, making it the first official public disclosure of their evidence.
The judge will then determine whether to send the case to trial.
Legal analysts say the evidence appears to be so strong that Holmes may well accept a plea agreement that would rule out the death penalty.
He faces multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.

Obama declares major disaster in Oklahoma
May 21, 2013 03:56 GMT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in Oklahoma as the state recovers from a massive tornado that ripped through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, killing dozens and flattening entire neighborhoods.
Obama has ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts. Individuals and business owners affected by the disaster may apply for federal grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs.
The president promised federal assistance in a phone conversation earlier Monday with Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin (FAL'-ihn). The Federal Emergency Management Agency has sent a special team to Oklahoma's emergency operations center to help out and dispatch resources.
