Foxconn denies worker unrest slows iPhone assembly

BEIJING (AP) -- A company that owns a plant in China that makes Apple's iPhones is denying that production was affected there.
But both state media and an overseas labor watch group say some workers stopped production lines there yesterday, apparently in a dispute over higher quality control standards.
China Labor Watch, based in New York, says as many as 4,000 workers at the Foxconn plant went on strike over the quality demands and the requirement that they work during an extended national holiday.
But in a statement, Foxconn -- an electronics manufacturer based in Taiwan -- says production continued without interruption.
It says there were two isolated, small scale disputes earlier in the week, but they were quickly addressed.
The company also says workers who were on the job over the holiday had volunteered to work, and were being paid three times their normal pay.
China's state news agency says some workers were unhappy when Apple strengthened quality inspections of the iPhone 5 following customer complaints of aesthetic flaws in the phones.
Labor activists have said the rollout of the iPhone 5 has led to longer working hours and more pressure on workers.

Forecasters: Potential tornado threat for Oklahoma
May 18, 2013 19:41 GMT

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Forecasters with the National Weather Service say severe thunderstorms with possible tornadoes are to move across much of Oklahoma.

Northwestern Oklahoma, including the Woodward area, faces the greatest threat late Saturday. On Sunday, the storm system is forecast to progress eastward, affecting Oklahoma City and Tulsa and areas in between.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman says there is a moderate risk of tornadoes Saturday in western Oklahoma. The threat area stretches north across Kansas and well into Nebraska.

A slight risk of severe storms reaches into central Oklahoma for Saturday night.

Sunday's moderate threat extends from south-central Oklahoma, through eastern Kansas and into western Missouri.

The Storm Prediction Center says the forecast map is still developing and that wind conditions that bring tornadoes could develop rapidly.
