Lawsuit Filed Against Narconon Arrowhead
A family just filed a lawsuit against Narconon Arrowhead after their
daughter became the third person to die at the drug rehab facility
within a nine month period. Fox 25 first told you about Narconon
Arrowhead back in May. The facility has ties to the Church of
Scientology. Fox 25's investigations have sparked national attention,
several investigations into the facility and two lawmakers plan to file
legislation to change the way rehab centers are regulated.
The
latest death at Narconon Arrowhead in Canadian, Oklahoma happened in
July. On Friday, the family of Stacy Murphy filed the lawsuit against
the facility. However, Murphy's family says the lawsuit is not about
money, it's about a message.
"The first time something happens
it's an incident," said Gary Richardson, Attorney for Stacy Murphy's
parents. "The second time it happens it's a coincidence. The third time
it happens, it's a trend. How many deaths have we had there in the last
18 months?"
Kaysie Werninck, Gabriel Graves, Hillary Holten and Stacy Murphy all died after checking into Narconon Arrowhead.
"Sometimes I still can't believe it," said Tonya White, Stacy Murphy's mom. "Still can't believe she's gone."
In July, Stacy Murphy became the third person to die at the drug rehab facility within a nine month period.
"I just couldn't believe it," said White. "I just kept screaming no, no, this can't be."
Murphy's mother, Tonya White says in July, Narconon Arrowhead allowed Murphy to take a "24-hour leave" to visit family.
"I
left her about 9-o-clock," said White. "I hugged her and I had no idea
that would be the last time I would be able to hug her."
White
says after her daughter returned to Narconon, she tested positive for
opiates, so Murphy was admitted into the facility's withdrawal unit.
"They
said they thought she was doing good but there was a shift change
between 7:30 and 9:20 the next morning that they didn't check on her,"
said White.
That's when Pittsburg County Sheriff's Deputies say Murphy was found dead in the center's detox unit, the morning of July 19th.
"They didn't protect her," said Richardson. "They didn't take care of her."
Now
Murphy's parents are suing Narconon Arrowhead for wrongful death,
negligence and violation of Oklahoma's Consumer Protection Act.
"There was misrepresentation in what Narconon was about," said Richardson.
Murphy's family is asking the facility for at least $225,000, but they say the lawsuit is about much more than money.
"I
want Narconon to make some changes in their staff, the way they operate
their detox unit, or if they can't make changes they need to shut
down," said White.
We contacted Narconon Arrowhead to get a statement about the lawsuit, but the facility has not gotten back to us.
