MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) -- A former Muskogee County jail detention officer has pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from an assault on an inmate at the facility in October.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday that Jerrod Lane entered the plea to use of excessive force, violating the civil rights of an inmate, falsifying records and making false statements to the FBI.
Court documents said Lane used pepper spray on a jail inmate who was restrained in a chair and didn't pose a physical threat. Prosecutors say Lane wanted to punish the inmate for bothering him.
Lane also was accused of falsifying reports by writing that the victim was physically resisting officers and wasn't restrained when the pepper spray was deployed.
Lane's attorney, Robert Ridenour, didn't immediately return messages seeking comment after hours.
