Okla. congressmen's farm truck bill gets approval

%reldate(2012-02-04T10:01:00

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A congressional committee has accepted farm truck legislation by U.S. Rep. James Lankford of Oklahoma.

Lankford says his bill is part of the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act that was passed Friday by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

The bill called the Farmer's Freedom Act would remove restrictions that prevent certain farm trucks from crossing state lines without federal vehicle regulations taking effect.

The Republican congressman says current law subjects family farmers to government regulations when crossing state lines with a gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds. Lankford says transporting two horses to a show or hauling hay on a trailer behind a pickup truck can easily top 26,000 pounds.

He says the bill removes a burdensome restriction and will allow neighboring communities to work together.
